Felipe
was a serious student of Tribal Arts,
Native American Art and Culture
when I adopted him
as my grandson
during a visit to
the American Indian Arts Institute
in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
As an elder of my people,
the Muskogee Nation-Creek Tribe,
I was touched by the
sincerity of Felipe, as
I address him.
Today, I call him Grandson.
As a past Director of an Indian Cultural Retention Program
for the state of Oklahoma, I know how important it is to support
artistic and talented young men, who are willing to use their education to
inspire others. Just as Felipe was considered to be one of IAIA’s best students,
being on the Presidents list and a member of Phi Thetha Kappa, he will continue
to create work which would be
inclusive of young people
from all walks of our diverse population.
